A Deep and Compassionate Life

Madison Ash Lignell, better known as Maddy, was born on November 28, 1994. We are devastated to tell family and friends that Maddy died by suicide in the early morning of May 15, 2021, after an intense and sudden mental health crisis that came on in just a few short days. We will be forever grateful that we had some indication that he was having a hard time, and we rushed to his side as soon as we  knew that he was struggling. Maddy spent his last two days embraced in the love and support of his parents-as well that of his sisters- and he was hopeful about feeling better in the very near future.

Maddy had just recently moved up to Redmond, Washington to begin his next adventure with SpaceX. With typical Maddy enthusiasm he was already searching for places to hike, camp, volunteer, and eat in the Pacific Northwest. He was excited about the work he'd be doing with SpaceX, connecting with old friends and making new ones, and volunteering to help save people and the planet.  His compassion and deep caring for others and causes will be his legacy.

He was the light of our lives. Maddy was loved beyond measure by his two older sisters, Shayna and Hanna, and adored by his two year old nephew and his extended family. He was a charmer from his earliest years and made friends with everyone he met. You could have camped, skied, hiked, climbed, scuba-dived, ridden a motorcycle, volunteered, canvassed for local politicians, or watched anime or Rick and Morty with him. You would have been lucky to receive one of his memes. And he was one of the most generous people on this earth. He was fun-loving but deeply affected by pain and suffering in the world. Our hearts are forever broken.

We would love for you to share your stories and pictures of Maddy on the Forum page of this website. Getting to know him through your eyes will be a comfort to us all.

Maddy's family will continue to update this page with more information, so continue to look back.

Many of the photos on this website were taken by Maddy, including the one of the tunnel on this page.
