So many times over the last week I’ve tried to write something here. It’s still so unreal. I didn’t spend a lot of time with Maddy but I watched him grow up through the eyes of his Aunts, Parents, Grandfather and Grandmother, all proudly sharing his accomplishments. The time I did spend with him I was touched by his gentle nature, big smile and sense of humor. What goes through my head, as it did when I got that unimaginable call from Nicole, is the refrain from Don McLean’s song Vincent. “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” Be at peace.
My heartfelt condolences to the Lignell & Ash families... and really, to all who knew and loved Maddy. I did not have the fortune of knowing him, but judging by the words of those who did, he was an amazing young man. This is the most unthinkable pain for any parent. I pray for Oliver & Jordana, that they find strength through all who loved Maddy... and to Maddy... Rest In Peace. 💫

Oliver and Jordana -While I wasn't so privileged as to have gotten to meet Maddy in-person, I feel as though I got a small taste of what a wonderful soul he was through Oliver's stories and updates. From the proud moments when Maddy's work helped with the SpaceX Rocket launch to daily tidbits about books you were sharing or upcoming trips, your family's pride and love for Maddy shone through nearly every day. As Oliver and I once remarked when musing on Maddy's incredible work, "He's literally building the future!"I cannot convey the depths of my sorrow for your loss. Yet, the joy and reflection this beautiful memorial elicits is both a testament to Maddy's brilliant spark and how truly special this family is. We love you and are sending all of our love your way; you are all in our thoughts.-Alli, Shivan, & Kimaya

As I sit here and watch this unfold I have a hard time expressing any words that may comfort you all. I am so devastated by this news. Having cared and loved for both Sunny and Ed and all the family it does give me some comfort that he is keeping them company. If you need to talk anytime please call me. I know all to well the debt that Maddy paid and I love you all. It does get better.

One of my favorite images of Maddy is when you all came to LA to visit the Ash grandparents—Maddy was probably 14, and, while all the adults were standing around talking, I look over and see Maddy fully engaged with my son, Rafi, who was probably 2 or 3 at the time. Maddy was holding Rafi’s hand, leading him around. Maddy spent a good 25-30 minutes with his attention solely on Rafi. They were running around the lawn, goofing off. Rafi was having the time of his life. In the next moment, he would come join the adults and be fully engaged with us. That’s Maddy. Deeply interested in others, with a passion for life that was infectious. What a beautiful soul.

Hi Shari- this is so true! Thank you for sharing such a lovely memory of Maddy. And that was so totally him, of course. Thank you again. If you ever remember and want to share any additional stories, pictures etc, I would absolutely love to hear them all. And they will be cherished forever.
Sending big love from Berlin,
Hanna

Oliver & Jordana,
We are devastated by the news. The pictures alone tell the story of an energetic, vibrant, and kind young man who surely left an indelible mark on the world around him. I can't begin to imagine the overwhelming grief of the family at losing such a light. Our family's thoughts are soberly with you during this dark period along with a fervent hope that light will once again break through the abyss of loss as the meaning of Maddy's life will surely transcend his death in touching others.
Thank you for sharing so publicly and bravely. Our family is better having now had a glimpse into the extraordinary meaning of his life.
